10 Must-visit places in Región de Los Ríos, South of Chile

1. Valdivia: According to this article (in Spanish), Valdivia was positioned for the second consecutive year as Chile's best city to live in, according to the 2019 Barómetro Imagen Ciudad survey. It was also chosen as the best place to visit.
Starting the tour at Plaza de la República, going for a walk downtown and after visiting the Cathedral, it’s a very good idea to go for some coffee at Entre Lagos, along with some of the delicatessen this place is famous for.

Then, the stroll may continue alongside the Calle Calle River Costanera (shoreline), which is called Valdivia River a little farther away and it’s the only navigable river in Chile. When reaching the limit of the city center, it’s the commercial and tourist area of Feria Fluvial (riverside market) that was declared a National Historic Monument in 2009; across the street it’s Mercado Municipal and only a few steps away, the Foucault Pendulum, an impressive must-visit place in Región de Los Ríos.

Going for a drive, the tour may continue across the Calle Calle River towards Isla Teja and visiting Parque Saval where the main attraction is the permanent display of sculptures and Laguna de los Lotos (lotus flower lagoon); and closeby, Botanical Garden of Universidad Austral de Chile. Valdivia is mainly a student city with a variety of alternatives for entertainment to enjoy the southern nightlife. In the Esmeralda neighborhood, there are some restaurants, pubs and nightclubs such as Carré Restaurant, Shot Karaoke and Clover Irish Pub. In the Yungay neighborhood, Ocio Restobar, In Isla Teja, El Búnker and downtown, Strike Karaoke and XS Nightclub within Dreams Casino Hotel.

2. Kunstmann Brewery: on the route from Valdivia towards Niebla, this is a must-visit for beer fans, who can also try some of the local culinary treats.

Niebla: After visiting Feria Costumbrista (Traditional Chilean Food Market) and Niebla Castle, this part of the tour may end in Playa Los Molinos, where there are many alternatives of restaurants by the beach, and the fishing cove is another must-visit in Región de Los Ríos.

4. Corral Bay is the oldest seaport in the South of Chile and along with Mancera Island and Niebla Castle they encompass the area that has one of the largest fort and castle systems built by the Spaniards in the entire continent. This impressive defense system protected the area from the pirates and corsairs of the 17th and 18th centuries who came to loot and plunder these lands.

5. Seven Lakes Route: Pellaifa, Calafquén, Pullinque, Pirehueico, Neltume, Panguipulli, and Riñihue lakes are part of this Nature's wonders, where activities like horse riding, kayaking, rafting, trekking, bird watching, and winter sports at Mocho-Choshuenco Volcano turn this area into another must-visit in Región de Los Ríos.Liquiñe_Ciudad Artesanal.jpg54.56 KB 6. Liquiñe Valley has more than 8 hot springs within a 2.5-miles area. Along with the adventure of trekking through the deep forest one may take home a token made out of wood by local artisans. Lago Ranco is the third largest lake in Chile, with 13 islands surrounded by waterfalls, uncharted rainforests in the Valdivian jungle, crystal clear waters of rivers and lakes and with a rich biodiversity. One can cycle through the lake basin and navigate its waters either by kayak or boat. A few kilometers away, Futrono, Coique Bay, Huapi Island, Maihue Lake, Los Saltos del Nilahue and Llifén Hot Springs are some of the main attractions of the area. Places like Anticura and Puyehue Lake may be visited where the Puyehue Volcano captures the whole view.
